Exclusive: Director Mimi Cave and Jojo T. Gibbs talk 'Fresh’ Movie

Now playing on Hulu is Fresh, a new horror comedy thriller marking the feature debut of filmmaker Mimi Cave from a screenplay by Lauryn Kahn. Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan, the cast also includes Jojo T. Gibbs, Andrea Bang, Dayo Okeniyi, Charlotte Le Bon, & Brett Dier.

Fresh follows Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones), who meets the alluring Steve (Sebastian Stan) at a grocery store and – given her frustration with dating apps – takes a chance and gives him her number. After their first date, Noa is smitten and accepts Steve’s invitation to a romantic weekend getaway. Only to find that her new paramour has been hiding some unusual appetites.

The film had its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.

Fresh marks Cave’s feature directorial debut. She began her career in the world of music videos and commercials directing films for Vance Joy, Danny Brown, Sleigh Bells, Sylvan Esso & Tune-Yards. Her shorts and music videos have garnered several awards and premiered at film festivals worldwide. Her recent short film I’m Happy, I Promise was an Official Selection for 2020 SXSW.

Gibbs is best known as Hattie, a queer black girl who is chasing her dreams of being a screenwriter in Los Angeles, in the BET comedy series, Twenties. The show was created by Emmy winner Lena Waithe. She previously appeared in several episodes of the Freeform series Good Trouble and has done stand-up on many stages across Los Angeles.

Blackfilmandtv.com’s Wilson Morales spoke to Cave and Gibbs about their first feature projects and playing the non-typical best friend role.
