Exclusive: Aaron Pierre and Kelly Macdonald talk HBO's Lanterns and playing John Stewart
Now playing on HBO and HBO Max is Lanterns, starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre. The eight-episode season debuts SUNDAY, AUGUST 16 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery with cosmic ties as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
The cast also includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.
Macdonald plays Sheriff Kerry, a no-nonsense woman deeply devoted to her family and close-knit town. Her resilience, shaped by a complex past that’s hardened her resolve, anchors her when the community’s secrets begin to surface.
The eight-episode Lanterns is produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros Television and DC Studios. Chris Mundy, who serves as showrunner, Lindelof and King are co-writing and executive producing. James Hawes is directing the first two episodes and also exec producing.
Pierre was the lead of Jeremy Saulnier’s Rebel Ridge, which plays on Netflix for three weeks, and voiced the titular character of Mufasa in Barry Jenkins’ animated Lion King prequel for Disney. He was also seen in Apple TV+’s The Morning Show, and starred as Malcolm X in the NatGeo series Genius: MLK/X. His credits also include Garth Davis’ Foe alongside Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan, Clement Virgo’s Brother and Jenkins’ limited series The Underground Railroad.
Macdonald earned an Emmy nomination for her role in Terence Winter’s mob drama series Boardwalk Empire. She won an Emmy for the BBC TV movie The Girl in the Café, whose U.S. home was on HBO.
