Exclusive: André Holland on producing and starring in ‘Love, Brooklyn’

Hitting New York’s Angelika Film Center on August 29 followed by an expanded release on Sept. 5 from Greenwich Entertainment is the romantic drama Love, Brooklyn, the directorial debut of Rachael Abigail Holder, from a screenplay by Paul Zimmerman

The film stars and is produced by André Holland, and features an ensemble cast including Nicole Beharie, DeWanda Wise, Cassandra Freeman, Cadence Reese, Carra Patterson, Joshua Boone, Saycon Sengbloh, and Roy Wood Jr..

The Harper Road, Daughter Films, Fireheart Entertainment, and Umbrelic Entertainment production had its World Premiere in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

The story follows three longtime Brooklynites as they navigate careers, love, loss and friendship against the rapidly shifting landscape of their beloved city. Roger (André Holland) is a writer fighting to maintain his creative integrity in the commercially driven publishing industry. Behind on a deadline, Roger distracts himself by hanging with his old flame Casey (Nicole Beharie), an art gallery owner wrestling with the fate of her struggling business in their rapidly gentrifying borough. Once lovers, they've attempted to convert their chemistry into a tentative friendship. Meanwhile, Roger is developing a new romance with Nicole (DeWanda Wise), a recently widowed mother who remains hesitant to open her heart to new love.

As Nicole's bond with Roger grows, so do their fears of vulnerability and commitment. And despite Casey's uneasy peace with Roger, old wounds and attractions begin to reemerge. As the city changes around them, all three are forced to contend with a past that won't let go, and a future that is anything but certain.

Love, Brooklyn was produced by André Holland, Maurice Anderson, Patrick Wengler, Kate Sharp and Liza Zusman with executive producers Steven Soderbergh, Andy Steinman, Jeffrey Deary, Thomas Zambeck, Brian Katz, Anish Gupta, Lance Blaise, Alexander Leff, Rachael Abigail Holder, and Sara McFarlane.

Holland is known for his 2016 performance as Kevin in the Academy Award-winning film Moonlight. His film, television, and theatre credits include the Cinemax series The Knick (2014–2015), the FX series American Horror Story: Roanoke, Ava DuVernay’s 2014 film Selma. On stage, he has starred in August Wilson's play Jitney on Broadway and played a lead role on the 2020 Netflix musical drama series The Eddy.
