Exclusive: Director Akinola Davies Jr. talks My Father's Shadow
Hitting theaters on February 13 from Mubi is the critically acclaimed My Father’s Shadow, directed by Akinola Davies Jr. and starring Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù and introducing Godwin Egbo and Chibuike Marvellous Egbo as his two sons.
A semi-autobiographical tale set over the course of a single day in the Nigerian capital Lagos during the 1993 Nigerian election crisis. The story follows a father (starring very talented Sope Dirisu as Folarin), estranged from his two young sons, as they reconnect one day and travel through the massive city of Lagos while political unrest threatens their journey home.
The screenplay is co-written by Akinola Davies Jr and Wale Davies. It's produced by Rachel Dargavel and Funmbi Ogunbanwo. The film initially premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it was given a Special Mention Prize. Then it played at tons of other fests: TIFF, London, Hamburg, Karlovy Vary, Athens, Chicago, etc.
