Exclusive: Jazz Raycole, Becki Newton and Angus Sampson talk Netflix's The Lincoln Lawyer series

Currently playing on Netflix from creator David E. Kelley is THE LINCOLN LAWYER series, starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Neve Campbell, Becki Newton, Angus Sampson, and Jazz Raycole. Also in the cast are Christopher Gorham, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Krista Warner, Jamie McShane, Michael Graziadei, LisaGay Hamilton, and Reggie Lee.

The Lincoln Lawyer novels follow Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), the half-brother of LAPD detective Harry Bosch (played over on Amazon by Titus Welliver) and an iconoclastic idealist who runs his law practice out of the back seat of his Lincoln Town Car, as he takes on cases big and small across the expansive city of Los Angeles. “Manuel is the ideal Mickey Haller, as Haller follows in the footsteps of his attorney father with the showmanship of his Mexican movie star mother,” says Connelly. “Manuel brings a powerful dynamic and dimension to the role — one that aligns with the books and will give the show the opportunity to celebrate the Latinx heritage and roots of this Los Angeles-based story.”

Based on The Brass Verdict, the second book in The Lincoln Lawyer series by Michael Connelly.

Connelly is an executive producer and writer on the series. The series was developed for television by Ted Humphrey who serves as showrunner, executive producer and writer. Ross Fineman and Kelley are also executive producers.

Raycole is Izzy, Mickey’s client, a young former addict charged with grand larceny for stealing a necklace to support her habit. Izzy’s clean now – a fact that Mickey can relate to – and he not only gets her acquitted but lets her pay off her bill by working as his driver. Raycole had a lead role in Freeform’s holiday movie Ghosting: The Spirit of Christmas. Her other TV credits include The Quad, Sweet/Vicious, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and iZombie.

Newton play Lorna, Mickey’s (Garcia-Rulfo) second ex-wife and a constant confidante who works as his office manager, running the business side of Mickey’s practice. Part secretary and part therapist, Lorna is supportive and encouraging of Mickey, but she’s also concerned about him taking on more than he can handle in his first important case back after rehab. Newton is known for her roles on ABC’s Ugly Betty, HBO’s Divorce and CBS All Access’ Tell Me a Story.

Sampson is Cisco, a former biker gang member who now serves as Mickey’s (yet to be cast) investigator, friend, and when necessary, bodyguard, Cisco is an imposing figure with a keen mind and a deep well of contacts on both sides of the law that help him do his job. Sampson’s credits include the role of Tucker in the Insidious movies, Mad Max: Fury Road, Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are and recurring roles in Fargo and The Walking Dead.

Blackfilmandtv.com’s Wilson Morales spoke with the trio about their roles in the series.
