Exclusive: Kyla Pratt and Julian Gant talk Call Me Kat Season 2

Currently airing on Thursdays on the Fox network is the comedy series Call Me Kat, starring Mayim Bialik; Swoosie Kurtz; Leslie Jordan; Kyla Pratt; Julian Gant; Cheyenne Jackson; and Christopher Rivas.

Based on the British series “Miranda,” created by Miranda Hart, CALL ME KAT stars Emmy Award nominee Mayim Bialik as an optimistic and fun-loving woman continuously defying societal expectations, and her mother’s wishes, to prove she can live a happy and fulfilling life on her own terms. Her first move? Using her entire savings to open a cat café in Louisville, KY. This season, Kat’s back, navigating life’s ups and downs with a little more self-assurance and a lot more whimsy. Kat’s in her element at her lively cat café, working alongside her friends: Randi (Kyla Pratt), a bold, aspiring artist, and Phil (Emmy Award winner Leslie Jordan), the café’s resident baker dipped in southern flair.

Across the way, the local piano bar, run by cool, down-to-earth Carter (Julian Gant), remains the gang's favorite watering hole, where Kat’s best friend from college, Max (Cheyenne Jackson), slings drinks and charms the patrons. All the while, Kat’s mother, Sheila (Emmy Award winner and Golden Globe nominee Swoosie Kurtz), actively keeps tabs on her daughter's romantic life, which found Kat in a tough spot at the end of Season One, having to choose between her new beau, Oscar (Christopher Rivas), or her long-time crush, Max. This year, Kat will find herself in all sorts of predicaments, handling them as only she can – with joy, humor, and positivity.

Pratt plays Randi, a hip, confident millennial who was named Louisville’s top barista four years in a row. Randi works at the café despite having no interest in cats. As someone who juggles multiple suitors, Randi encourages Kat to adopt a new approach to dating. Pratt is best known for her starring role on UPN ‘s comedy series One On One and for playing Maya Doolittle in Eddie Murphy’s Dr. Doolittle movie franchise. Pratt also starred in the Freeform drama series Recovery Road and will come back to reprise her voice role as Penny Proud in Disney+ animated series The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, a revival of The Proud Family which originally ran on Disney Channel from 2001 to 2005.

Gant, whose credits include CBS’ Superior Donuts and a recurring role on NBC’s Good Girls, plays Carter. He manages a piano bar, The Middle C, in a trendy area of Louisville. Recently divorced, he’s navigating life as a single dad, while complaining every step of the way.

Blackfilmandtv.com’s Wilson Morales recently caught up with Pratt and Gant while they were on set as they spoke about the characters they play in the series.
