Exclusive: Samora Smallwood talks Lifetime's Murder At The Hotel and Her Rom-Com Miniseries Coming Home
Recently shown on Lifetime was the thriller Murder At The Hotel, starring Samora Smallwood, Matt Wells, Yasmin McKay, Justin Nurse, Jonathan Valvano, Lauren Vandenbrook, Shanna Armogan and Peter Dillon.
Shot in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, ‘Murder At The Hotel’ revolves around a group of stranded travelers, including Megan Marris (Smallwood) and her family, who find themselves stuck at an airport hotel when a snowstorm grounds all flights. Over the course of a tense night, old flames are rekindled, buried secrets come to light, and a brutal crime unfolds. What begins as a frustrating delay quickly becomes a deadly game of trust and survival.
For Samora Smallwood, timing couldn’t have been more perfect as the film was released not long after her project, a rom-com miniseries called ‘Coming Home,’ was released and currently playing on Bell Fibe’s streaming channel TV1.
Smallwood stars and makes her directorial debut in the show, which is billed as an adult coming-of-age story “that explores the humorous and poignant realities of returning to one’s roots while striving to build a future in the art.” Inspired by Smallwood’s personal experiences, it will explore the spaces between her small hometown and Hollywood.
The cast also includes Kevin Hanchard, Karen LeBlanc, Tommy James Murphy, Paula Brancati, Susan Coyne, and Naomi Snieckus.
The 4 x 20-minute series is produced for Bell Fibe TV1 by Smallwood’s Toronto-based prodco Samora Gloria Entertainment.
Smallwood’s previous credits include the Apple TV+ miniseries, The Big Cigar, the Hallmark Channel drama series, The Way Home, and OWN’s prime time soap opera The Kings of Napa. In 2022, Smallwood won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Lead Actress in a Television Film or Miniseries at the 10th Canadian Screen Awards in 2022 for her performance in the Lifetime television film Death She Wrote (2021)
