Exclusive: Sneaks cast interviews with Martin Lawrence, Keith David and Macy Gray
Coming to theaters on April 18 is the animated film Sneaks, written and directed by Rob Edwards and featuring a bevy of talent.
The voice cast features Anthony Mackie, Martin Lawrence, Swae Lee, Chloe Bailey, Macy Gray, Roddy Rich, Ella Mai, Quavo, Mustard, Young Miko, with Keith David, Chris Paul, and Laurence Fishburne. The animated movie also features new music by Grammy winner Mustard.
The film was produced by Len Hartman, Gil Cloyd, Laurence Fishburne, Helen Sugland, Robyn Klein, Jeremy Ross, and Meko Yohannes. Animated by Lengi Studios & Modern Toons.
In a fantastic, frenetic, fast-and-loose world in which sneakers and sport shoes live rich lives alongside the humans who love them, value them, or trade them, a special pair of shoes has to evade devious forces and make their way to glory. Ty (voiced by ANTHONY MACKIE) is a box-fresh, high-performance and coveted shoe known as Alchemy 24 (“The Gold Standard in Footwear”). Maxine (recording artist CHLOE BAILEY, Grown-ish) is his sister, but this pair have different goals: Maxine wants to see the world, while Ty is fine letting the world come to them at a mega-event. Then Maxine is stolen by a sneakerhead, The Collector (Academy Award nominee, Emmy and Tony award winner, and SNEAKS producer LAURENCE FISHBURNE), who works with a villainous shoe-smith called The Forger (Grammy award winner RODDY RICCH) who plans to dismantle Ty and Maxine to make cheap knockoffs. Helped by a street-smart sneaker called J.B. (MARTIN LAWRENCE), Ty hits the road to find where he belongs, save his sister, and maybe even meet Edson (Grammy nominee SWAE LEE), a high schooler whose dream is to own a prized pair of Alchemy 24’s.
J.B. (voiced by comedy legend MARTIN LAWRENCE, star of the Bad Boys franchise, Death at a Funeral, Big Momma’s House, Life, Do the Right Thing, TV’s Martin) is a street-smart shoe who knows his way around New York City’s nooks and crannies. Living without the other half of their pair can be tough for a sneaker, but J.B. has survived on his own by hustling and conning his way through life. Many years ago, J.B. played on the foot of a promising young basketball player named Isaac. Believing he was the best sneak on the court, J.B. lost focus during a pivotal moment, resulting in an injury to Isaac. Since then, J.B. has been on his own. However, after meeting Ty and joining him on his journey, J.B. gets a taste of what it’s like to be part of a pair again — and to have real friends.
O.G. (voiced by Emmy winner KEITH DAVID, American Fiction, Nope, Crash, Armageddon, Platoon) is the King of the Blacktop Court. O.G. has been around for a long time: An original Chuck Taylor Converse, he’s a well-respected figure in the shoe community, and many ask him for guidance. While O.G. has a lot of gravitas, he’s also a bit of a jokester.
Adriana (voiced by Grammy-winning music legend MACY GRAY) is a good-looking shoe — and she knows it! — who also has a heart of gold. Adriana is city royalty and is spotted at the biggest events in New York. When it comes to being in the know, she’s the top of her game. When J.B. introduces her to Ty, Adriana agrees to help him find Maxine and utilizes her army of loyal high-heels to find out where The Collector’s hideout could be.
