Exclusive: Denzel Washington Will Start Shooting The Equalizer 3 With Antoine Fuqua In 2022

While promoting his latest film, The Tragedy of Macbeth, Denzel Washington has confirmed with Blackfilmandtv.com that he will be reuniting with director Antoine Fuqua on a third installment of The Equalizer franchise, with production to start in 2022.

Fuqua had directed the previous films, The Equalizer in 2014 and The Equalizer 2 in 2018. Released by Sony Pictures, both film have generated a combined $382M at the box office worldwide. This will also be the fifth collaboration between Fuqua and Washington as they worked on a remake of The Magnificent Seven in 2016 and Training Day in 2001. It was the latter film that netted Washington his second Academy Award and first for Best Actor.

In the Equalizer films, Washington plays Robert McCall, a retired military officer who pretended to die in order to live a quiet life. He ultimately comes out of voluntary retirement to save a young woman, and an encounter with members of the wild Russian herd fuels his thirst for justice. When vulnerable individuals require retaliation, McCall transforms into a guy who kills, which he would never have found without his abilities.

Besides acting in Macbeth, for which Washington recently received a SAG nomination for his Outstanding Lead Actor, he also directed A Journal for Jordan, which is currently in theaters and stars Michael B. Jordan and Chante Adams.

Fuqua is currently working on Emancipation, which stars Will Smith. In 2021, he directed Infinite with Mark Wahlberg and The Guilty with Jake Gyllenhaal. He also serves as executive producer of the Fox drama series The Resident and the Paramount+ series Mayor of Kingston
