Razaaq Adoti To Direct Sci-Fi Drama ‘Base Human’ Starring Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Darryl Vega, & Omatola Jalade Ekeinde
Fresh off the festival circuit and theatrical release of the UK-Nigerian action thriller SON OF THE SOIL, which climbed to the #1 on Netflix in Africa, writer-actor-producer Razaaq Adoti will mark his official directorial debut on the epic, sci-fi feature titled, BASE HUMAN.
Casting has already begun. Already attached to the project are Hakeem Kae-Kazim as well as newcomer and social media influencer Darryl Vega, and one of Nigeria’s biggest stars, Omatola Jalade Ekeinde.
BASE HUMAN is an inspiring and thought-provoking story that not only showcases a futuristic urban African metropolis, but also boldly explores timely themes of war, mass migration, identity, and what it truly means to be human in an ever-evolving world. Ahead of its time when it was first written, the project reflects Adoti's vision of a future where African stories are at the forefront of global science fiction.
With an imagination unbound by casting decisions, Adoti began creating the stories he wanted to see on screen. Now, he is making a bold shift from action to science fiction with BASE HUMAN, a feature screenplay born from his lifelong love of the genre. Motivated by the lack of African and diaspora representation in mainstream sci-fi, Adoti penned the script more than a decade ago, fully aware of the challenges that could come with bringing such an ambitious vision to the big screen. Today, however, he believes the industry—and audiences—are finally ready for a story that places African perspectives at the center of a futuristic narrative.
“With the success of BLACK PANTHER, there is a clear global audience open to stories from Africa and beyond,” said Adoti. “This relatively new term, ‘Afrofuturism’ feels like a cultural, technological and spiritual movement that is poised to explode in much the same way Afrobeats has transformed the global music industry.” He added, “People are looking for fresh perspectives, new worlds, and stories that reflect the richness of our experiences. I believe BASE HUMAN is part of that evolution.”
To bring that vision to life, Adoti plans to embrace emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, as a creative tool. Committed to using AI responsibly and with integrity, he sees the technology as a way to enhance the filmmaking process while remaining firmly rooted in human storytelling, creativity, and artistic expression.
Adoti believes BASE HUMAN would have been cost-prohibitive to bring to the screen just a few years ago. However, advancements in technology have made it possible for the filmmaker to realize his ambitious vision of a richly detailed, futuristic world. By leveraging emerging tools and innovative production techniques, Adoti can create expansive environments and immersive visuals that previously would have required a massive budget and extensive traditional CGI resources.
“The technology has finally caught up with the story,” said Adoti. “What once seemed financially out of reach is now within reach, allowing independent filmmakers like myself to tell bigger, bolder stories without compromising the vision.”
