Exclusive: From Hustle & Flow to Song Sung Blue, Director Craig Brewer talks on his love for music

Hitting theaters starting on December 25th, 2025, on Christmas Day from Focus Features, is the musical comedy Song Sung Blue, directed by Craig Brewer and starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson. This is a fictional adaptation of the documentary of the same name - about Lightning and Thunder, a Milwaukee husband and wife Neil Diamond tribute act, experiencing soaring success and devastating heartbreak in their musical journey together. 

Written by Brewer, based on the documentary film of the same name (2008) by Greg Kohs, the cast also includes Michael ImperioliElla AndersonKing PrincessMustafa ShakirHudson Hensley, with Fisher Stevens and Jim Belushi.

Produced by Brewer alongside Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and John Fox, the film had its world premiere as the closing-night film of AFI Fest.

Brewer’s breakout 2005 film Hustle & Flow won the Audience Award at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and achieved commercial success, along with Oscar Nomination for Terrence Howard and an Academy Award for Best Original Song, "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp". He is also known for directing 2006’s Black Snake Moan with Samuel L. Jackson, the 2011 remake of Footloose, the 2019 film Dolemite Is My Name and the 2021 film Coming 2 America, the latter two films starring Academy Award nominee Eddie Murphy.
