Sinners Makes $45M In 2nd Weekend; Ryan Coogler 1st Black Director With Four Films To Gross $100M Domestically

With an estimated $45M box office take over its 2nd weekend, Sinners has crossed over the $100M mark with a total of $122.53M in just 9 days. At a -6% drop, Deadline reports that its a magnificent hold for a R-rated horror movie up there with Heart Eyes (+19%) and Get Out (-15%).

That places its director Ryan Coogler in a rare field.

He’s the first Black director to have four films cross over $100M domestically with Sinners, 2018 Black Panther ($700M), 2022 Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($453M), and 2015 Creed ($109M).

That’s one more than the following Black Directors

F. Gary Gray -  2017 The Fate of the Furious ($225M), 2015 Straight Outta Compton ($161M), and 2003 The Italian Job ($106.1M)

Jordan Peele - 2019 Us ($175M), 2017 Get Out ($176M), and 2022 Nope ($123M)

Tim Story - 2005 Fantastic Four ($154M), 2007 Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer ($131M), 2014 Ride Along ($134M)

He’s 8th Black Director to have an ORIGINAL film cross over $100M domestically

Ryan Coogler’s 2025 Sinners ($122.5M)

Jordan Peele’s 2019 Us ($175M), 2017 Get Out ($176M), 2022 Nope ($123M)

F. Gary Gray’s 2015 Straight Outta Compton ($161M)

Keenan Ivory Wayans’ 2000 Scary Movie ($157M)

Tim Story’s 2014 Ride Along ($134M)

Malcolm D. Lee’s 2017 Girl Trip ($140M)

Lee Daniels’ 2013 Lee Daniels’ The Butler ($116M)

Sidney Poitier’s 1980 Stir Crazy took in a domestic total $101.3M but there are no records that show how many days it took to reach that mark.

While it’s great to direct a sequel, a comic book movie or a book adaptation, it’s a greater feeling when one can create an original story and audiences come in droves to see it.
