Exclusive: Andra Day Talks Is This Thing On?, working with Bradley Cooper & Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Hitting theaters on Dec. 19 from Searchlight Pictures is the dramedy Is This Thing On?, directed by Bradley Cooper and starring Will Arnett as Alex and Laura Dern as Tess.

Inspired by the true story of British comedian John Bishop, the cast also includes Andra Day, Bradley Cooper, Amy Sedaris, Sean Hayes, Christine Ebersole, Ciarán Hinds, and Scott Icenogle.

The film had its premiere at the 2025 New York Film Festival this fall as the Closing Night Film.

In a pair of galvanizing, deeply honest performances, Will Arnett & Laura Dern play Alex & Tess Novak, whose marriage has reached an impasse. With amicable sorrow, the couple—parents of two young boys—mutually agree to split up. Yet in Cooper's keenly observed comic drama, their separation leads to unpredictable midlife self-reckonings, most dramatically in Alex's wild career pivot to become a confessional stand-up comedian in NYC's West Village, where he finds new direction & camaraderie.

Day has also been tapped to play Athena, the Greek Goddess of Wisdom and Annabeth’s mom, in the second season of Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Best known for her soulful singing, Day made her acting debut in Lee Daniels’ 2021 biopic “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” in which she played the title role. The performance earned her a Golden Globe for best drama actress and a Grammy for best soundtrack, as well as a best actress Oscar nomination. Her other screen credits include lead roles in the 2024 films “Exhibiting Forgiveness,” from artist Titus Kaphar, and “The Deliverance,” reuniting with Daniels.
